Is Your Attorney Real? How To Avoid Being Scammed

Immigration law is very complex. In Colorado, only licensed attorneys can give legal advice, but every year people lose thousands of dollars to notarios who promise work they are not qualified to do, or scammers who claim to be attorneys, but aren't.

Real attorneys won’t guarantee outcomes in your case, and they won’t charge you for forms, or keep your documents. They can be expensive, but you are buying peace of mind.

Always check to see if the person you want to hire is an actual attorney before giving them any money. Here are three ways to do that:

1) Search an attorney’s name in the Colorado Bar Association’s listings.

2) Search their name in the listings of the American Immigration Lawyer Association.

3) Search their name in the listing of the U.S. District Court of Colorado.

What to do if you see ICE activity?

When you see what you think is, or could be, ICE activity, please report it to the Colorado Rapid Response Network (CORRN). A call to the CORRN hotline will activate volunteers to go to the site and document what is happening. With this documentation, CORNN can dispel rumors and calm fears in the community.

What You Can Do, If Your Employer Won’t Pay You

Wage theft is the failure to pay workers the full wages to which they are legally entitled. Wage theft is illegal, and unfortunately, it is common in Colorado and in Boulder County. El Comité staff can help you get paid.

If you live in, or the unpaid work was done in Denver, you can file a complaint with Denver Labor. Send  a letter demanding payment. If no answer is received in 14 days, file a complaint with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.
